Top Surfing Destinations in the Philippines

From the beaches of Ilocos Norte to the shores of Samar resorts, the Philippines is surrounded with fantastic surfing locales for the avid surfer or even beginner. So if you want to catch some great waves, here are a couple of places you may want to try.

Cloud 9 in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte

In terms of fantastic surf spots, this location has placed the Philippines on the map and was heralded as the "Surfing Capital of the Philippines." A surfing trip to the country is simply not the same without visiting the shores of Siargao for a sight of these waters. And just off the island are other destinations, like Rock Island and Daku Island, for more experienced surfers looking to catch more thrilling waves.

Majestics Reef in Puraran Bay, Baras, Catanduanes

The name pretty much says it all. Majestics Reef is home to magnificent long-barrel waves, especially around August to September. The views are stunning as well, thanks to the scenic setting on the shore where you can stay in nipa huts in an area sprawling with palm trees.

Presenting another picturesque landscape is Twin Rocks. With frequent waves of about 50- to150-m left and right waves with 3 to 4 swells, it's perfect for the surfer who's also looking forward to relaxing and enjoying the vistas. Nipa huts are common accommodations, with about a 300-yard distance to the main break.

Doot Poktoy in Lanuza Bay, Surigao del Sur

Doot Poktoy is blessed with some of the best waves in the world. Situated on the southern edge of the Northwestern Pacific typhoon belt, the waves driven here highly depend on the typhoon passing near its shores. On a good day, the waves can reach up to 15 ft, with 9 to 14 waves per set.

Kido's Point in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur

If you surf for sport, you may want to visit Kido's Point. It's a popular destination for surfing competitions and events in the province of Ilocos Sur. Participants vary from different surfing locations around the country, so it's a great way to meet fellow surfers and learn a thing or two.

Calicoan Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar

Home to the Calicoan island resort called Calicoan Surf Camp, this place is ideal for beginners around the months of April to November. The island's ABCD Beach produces both left-hand and right-hand waves that suit every surfer. So whether you're new to the exhilarating sport or not, you might want to stay a while. Check out the Samar resorts in the area and catch a few awesome waves off this pristine island.

Best Surfing Locations in The Philippines for Beginners

From the beaches of Camarines Norte to the comforts of Samar resorts, there are myriad destinations in the Philippines for surfers who are new to the sport of riding the waves. So if you're a beginner looking to enhance those surfing skills without getting caught in treacherous waters, you may want to try these ideal locales.

Bagasbas Beach in Daet, Camarines Norte

Bagasbas Beach is a safe surfing spot for beginners as the waves tend to break on the sand bar. Producing varying levels, however, the surfs have the tendency to get a little inconsistent from time to time. But given the right weather conditions, these waves can rise high enough to push for a longer ride.

San Juan, La Union

One of the most accessible surfing locations in the country are at the beaches of La Union. Here you'll find Billabong Surf School where you can take up a few classes and learn a few techniques. Board rentals are also available. Keep in mind that as it is easily accessed and has a short coastline, it can get crowded pretty fast.

Daku Island in Surigao del Norte

Waves are not too high, lodging is cheap, and the area is not too frequented by people. Crystal Beach in Zambales

Another area within reach of Metro Manila is Crystal Beach in the province of Zambales. Make it a point to visit around the months of November to February where the waves are not too high. With mid-level breaks, you shouldn't find it too difficult to get a good set and wiping out is safe as you're caught by shallow sand at the bottom.
